The social, educational, and legal project “LGBTIQ Life Is Important,” initiated by The LGBT life, focuses on supporting the LGBTIQ+ community in Berlin and combating homophobia and transphobia. Between June and August, 15 consultations were conducted within the framework of the project for people who have become victims of violence and hostility due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
“The project aims to help people who are confronted with violence and discrimination. It encompasses various areas, including psychological, social, and legal support. For example, the social workers involved in the project assist in solving everyday problems that have arisen due to discrimination, while the project’s lawyers provide legal advice, help with filing reports to the police, and represent clients in other authorities where legal assessment and solutions are required,” explains Fatal Flash, founder and chairperson of The LGBT life.
The number of homophobic crimes in Berlin has continued to rise in recent years. In 2020, 377 such crimes were registered according to reports; in 2021, there were already 456. Yet only 13% of the victims report these incidents to the police. This indicates a low level of trust in law enforcement agencies and fear of possible consequences, emphasizes Fatal Flash.
The goal of the project is not only to create a safe environment for the affected LGBTIQ+ individuals but also to reduce the level of homophobic and transphobic violence through educational work and public outreach. Therefore, the project invites everyone who shares its values to join the fight for the rights and safety of the LGBTIQ+ community in Berlin.
